A GameStop employee has been fired after leaking the announcement of a Nintendo Switch-themed The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. The employee, known as Mike, claimed he leaked the information out of his passion for the franchise and wanted to give fans a heads-up regarding pre-orders opening.
Initially, there seemed to be no repercussions, but Nintendo soon got involved. The company managed to identify Mike and demanded GameStop take action against him. Despite GameStop's initial support for their employee, who had a positive track record, Nintendo persisted and even threatened to impose sanctions against the retail giant, potentially jeopardizing their partnership.
Feeling the pressure, GameStop management ultimately decided to fire Mike. The ease with which he was identified was due to his lack of discretion in hiding personal information when leaking the news.
