Pup Granny Smith has been drafted to Team Fluff from Upstate New York's Paws Crossed Animal Rescue. She will be appearing in Animal Planet's Puppy Bowl on Feb. 2, 2020.
The Puppy Bowl is back for 2020 and animal lovers across the country are gearing up to watch Team Ruff and Team Fluff face off on the mini gridiron of the Geico Stadium in what has become a favorite, annual pre-Super Bowl tradition. The 16th annual Puppy Bowl airs Sunday, February 2, 2020 (2/2/20), and wraps up right before the big game between San Francisco and Kansas City.
Puppy Bowl 2020 airs on Animal Planet, and can be streamed live on fuboTV, Hulu with Live TV and AT&T TV Now.
The Puppy Bowl features shelter dogs from around the country trying to score touchdowns with different toys scattered all over the mini-Super Bowl stadium. Basically the camera follows the dogs around for two hours while they wrestle over different toys and the announcers try their best to convince you there’s some order to the chaos unfolding before you.
It might just be the cutest television event of the year, and it’s as much great entertainment as it is an opportunity for Animal Planet to encourage viewers to consider adopting a shelter dog.
This year, the Puppy Bowl will feature 42 dogs on the field at once and a total of 96 players appearing over the course of the game—the most ever. You can see photos of every dog in the “starting lineup” on Animal Planet’s website.
Puppy Bowl XVI starts at 3 p.m. ET on Animal Planet and runs for two hours to 5 p.m., giving you a nice break before the kickoff for Super Bowl LIV.
Viewers in Upstate New York should be sure to cheer on some local dogs, including puppy Granny Smith, on Team Ruff. Another, older dog named George will play on Team Oldies in the Dog Bowl, a newer event that airs on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 8 p.m. ET, also on Animal Planet. Both dogs were sheltered at Paws Crossed Animal Rescue in Elmsford, NY.

Wait, these are shelter dogs? Can I adopt one?
Well, technically yes, but most likely not. The Puppy Bowl, unlike its NFL counterpart, is filmed months in advance. By the time it airs and fills you with the desire to call and adopt your favorite, most of these fluffy pups have already been adopted. In fact, the show has a track record of 100 percent adoption rate by the time it airs. But don’t let that stop you from helping another friend find its new forever home.
What about the people involved?
Comedian Whitney Cummings, “Property Brothers” Jonathan and Drew Scott and singer Emmylou Harris will all make an appearance during the game. Puppy Bowl “rufferee” Dan Schachner will return, and NBC TV correspondent Jill Rappaport will be announcing as well.
Yes, there’s a halftime show
The Puppy Bowl halftime show features kittens named Jenni-Purr Lopez and Cat-ira who will perform a special rendition of “Catnips Don’t Lie!” There will also be some pygmy goat and armadillo cheerleaders, if football-playing dogs and singing cats isn’t enough of a cuteness overload for you.
