PlayStation VR New Releases This Week – 26 January – February 1

PlayStation VR has proven itself as a viable platform for innovative gaming, with Sony releasing groundbreaking titles every week from a variety of developers. Now well established in it’s second year, PSVR is hitting its stride, with a variety of quality games reaching critical mass and meriting mainstream attention.
With games like Blood and TruthBeat SaberTrover Saves The Universe, and AstroBot Rescue Mission bringing multitudes of new gamers into the VR fold, we thought we would shine a light on new (and possibly lesser-known) titles as they release.
This week is brings two interesting ports to the system, both early VR titles that are variations on tower defense:

Throw Anything (releases 01/30)

Throw Anything has been available on Steam since July, 2018, and though it does not have a ton of reviews, the reviews that are available are squarely in the “Positive” camp. Boasting a cool polygonal cartoon-ish visual style, Throw Anything appears to be all bright colors and fast action.
While the PlayStation description doesn’t offer a ton of info on the game, the Steam description is much more helpful. Essentially, players will find themselves in a room at the top of a building, with zombies crawling up the side. It is up to the player to smash and grab anything in the room to hurl it at the encroaching hoard. It’s a cool concept, and an interesting twist on the old “VR wave shooter” that we’ve all played a million times.
Knew a guy in college – would have enjoyed an excuse to throw his guitar out a window. Just sayin.
Unlike a lot of games of this nature, the devs at Visual Light took the time to create a story for Throw Anything:
“The mysterious “Scientist X” has decided to play God – conducting secret, forbidden experiments in secluded laboratories throughout the world.. To conquer whole world by spreading zombie virus using ubiquitous cube..
“However, five scientist who oppose X’s terrible plan divide ubiquitous cube into 5 pieces and hid throughout the world and enraged mystery Scientist X invades the world using zombies to find cube!
“The world is quickly being overrun by these undead abominations – turning everyday peace into a never ending cycle of pain and suffering.
“Get secret missions from Secret Delivery Agency (SDA) and collect cubes to save the world from zombie horde!”
Some features from the Steam page:
  • Enjoy laying waste to fully destructible environments!
  • Throw any object within reach – humans included!
  • Take on 6 challenging stages about to be overrun by the zombie horde!
  • Defeat 5 mid bosses and 6 powerful “main” bosses!
  • Collect ancient relics to save the world!
  • Defeat zombies and get powerful weapons as rewards!
  • Test your limits at various difficulty levels!
The official blurb from the PlayStation Blog reads as follows:
“Get secret missions from Secret Delivery Agency (SDA) and save the world from zombie horde in the VR action game, Throw Anything! There is nowhere to run… and nowhere to hide as zombies climb up the walls hoping to satisfy their appetite for brains. Face off against starving zombies in high-rise buildings across the globe!”

Vigilante Ranger

Developed by Brazilian dev house Sinergia Studios, Vigilante Ranger was first release on Oculus and Oculus Go in 2018. Like Throw Anything, Vigilante Ranger appears to have a very bright color palate, and appealing visuals that scream “early VR”.
Tower defense games are right up my alley. I love it when bad guys line up and let me shoot them all in a row. All that running around and aiming gets tiresome. I just want to push a button and make stuff explode.
Not a ton of information is available online concerning Vigilante Ranger, but from what I gather it is a first-person tower defense title, with players taking position high above invaders’ pathways and firing down weapons on them, before displacing to a different perch. Eachtower has its own unique weapons, which allows for an additional layer of strategy.
I grabbed the following bullet points from the Oculus Go store:
  • Immersion in monumental and impressive scenarios;
  • Innovative VR gameplay: travel tower by tower, each one with its respective weapon where the player must stop the enemies´ hordes;
  • Short and stimulating gameplay sessions, matches of up to 5 minutes.
  • The official blurb from the PlayStation Blog reads as follows:
    “Vigilante Ranger is an intense tower defense virtual reality game that will transport you to a dystopian future where the machines have taken control of the world. Complete all the missions from the stages and defeat all of the menacing bosses to become the savior of humanity!”
